UCD Marian Basketball Club – A Legacy Elevated by AI
Case Study: UCD Marian Basketball Club and SportsVisio
UCD Marian Basketball Club has long been a cornerstone of Irish basketball. Based in Dublin, Ireland the club has built a reputation for excellence, fostering elite talent and competing at the highest level in the Irish Super League. However, like many teams, UCD Marian faced challenges in optimizing game analysis, player performance tracking, and opponent scouting.
Club Background: A Legacy of Excellence
The club was founded in 1968 as Marian Basketball Club by students and alumni of Marian College.
A major milestone came in 1972 when Marian secured its first national title, the National Cup, under player-coach Paul Meany. In 1978, Marian reached the pinnacle of Irish basketball, winning the National League title—the first of two top-flight championships.
The 1980s brought significant change as Irish basketball evolved with the introduction of paid players. The club played a key role in the sport’s development, organizing Ireland’s first-ever televised basketball tournament in 1980 and competing internationally in events such as the Federation Cup and U.S. tours against NCAA teams.
In 1998, a pivotal decision linked Marian Basketball Club with University College Dublin (UCD), forming UCD Marian—the first club-university partnership of its kind in Ireland, a model later adopted by many others.
UCD Marian’s dedication was recognized in 2010 when the club was named Basketball Ireland’s Club of the Year, capping off a decade of growth and success, including an U20 National Title. In 2011, with a roster built around homegrown talent, UCD Marian ended a 25-year wait for another National Cup victory, defeating Killester. That core group went on to compete at the highest level for several seasons before winning the Super League title in 2018, marking the club’s second national league championship.
Today, UCD Marian remains a powerhouse in Irish basketball, blending elite competition with a strong commitment to player development and community engagement. After briefly stepping away from the Super League in 2022, the club once again relied on its youth development program, winning a national underage title and using that core to return to the Super League after just one season—a testament to its enduring legacy and commitment to success.
Bringing AI to the Court: A Coach’s Dream
In 2024, UCD Marian integrated SportsVisio’s AI-driven video analysis and stat tracking, instantly transforming how the club’s Super League, U20 and U18 squads approach game preparation and player development.
Historically, coaches had to manually review hours of game footage, breaking down plays, tagging key moments, and compiling clips for player development. This was a time-consuming process that often delayed meaningful feedback for players. Recognizing the need for a faster, more efficient approach, UCD Marian turned to SportsVisio and the impact was immediate.
Smarter Coaching Through Data-Driven Strategy
With automated tagging and stat breakdowns powered by computer vision, SportsVisio eliminates the need for coaches to spend hours manually reviewing and tagging footage. SportsVisio has helped coaches identify hidden trends that were previously difficult to detect in real-time.
For example, early in the season, UCD Marian’s shot chart data revealed that the team struggled with contested three-pointers but excelled in transition scoring. With this data, the coaching staff adjusted offensive sets to create more fast-break opportunities, leading to a 20% improvement in scoring efficiency in transition. Gareth O’Reilly, UCD Marian Assistant Coach has seen the benefits to the staff and players.
"We’re finding it really, really helpful. It saves us an awful lot of time - especially with the video breakdowns. Being able to see everyone’s turnovers, and the stuff you don’t normally see in the box scores. Being able to see trends around where we’re losing the ball and how we’re running our offense. Clicking in here has been helpful for us this season."
With next day access to full box stats, shot charts, player +/- and clips from every play, the coaching staff can make adjustments faster, train smarter, and maximize their players’ potential.
Faster Turnaround Time for In-Season Player Development
With quick access to clips, players no longer have to wait days for feedback in a team film session. SportsVisio enables self-assessment, allowing athletes to review their own highlights, mistakes, and efficiency metrics after a game.
Jon Jean, has been playing for UCD Marian for four seasons and feels SportsVisio both helps players develop but also helps make the club more attractive to future pros.
“I’ve loved being part of this club since I arrived, but SportsVisio has also helped me a lot this year. I can watch back clips and see how I can improve on a game by game basis. For other professionals coming into Ireland, the system can also help them build out their clips and social media, that will help them hopefully earn another contract, whether in Ireland or elsewhere.”
With clearer, more actionable insights, players gain better decision-making skills, leading to faster in-season improvements and stronger performances in high-pressure situations.

Enabling Long Term Player Development
The impact of SportsVisio extends beyond in-season performance, playing a key role in long-term player development as UCD Marian nurtures young talent with the goal of securing a third top-flight league title.
The club’s motto, "Optimum Optare"—The Pursuit of Excellence—remains central to its philosophy today.
Paul Meany emphasized this focus on player development:
"Our ethos is about bringing out the best in our players, both on and off the court. At the Super League level, we strive to develop elite basketball players, and our scholarship program with UCD plays a key role in that. For the past decade under Ioannis Liapakis, we’ve placed a strong emphasis on off-season development. SportsVisio’s ability to compile player-specific clips for the entire season is a game-changer for us.”
For example, the team’s center Eoin Nelson, recently returned from playing NCAA basketball in the U.S. This summer, the club can easily review his footage, analyze what worked and what didn’t, and tailor his workouts accordingly. Historically, feedback was based purely on coaching memory and anecdotal evidence—now, the content is instantly available, allowing players to take ownership of their development, and review specific moments easily from their phone at anytime.
Club Development & Innovation
UCD Marian continues to explore the full potential of SportsVisio, with endless possibilities for player development, game analysis, and club promotion.
Conor Meany, a former Super League player for 15 years, was part of the club’s successes from 2010 onward. With experience at Basketball Ireland, the sport’s governing body, he was familiar with many existing systems but was particularly impressed by SportsVisio:
"At first, I was skeptical, given what I knew about some of the more complex systems on the market. It almost seemed too good to be true. But we’ve been extremely happy with SportsVisio and how it’s immediately improved our game analysis. The fact that we aren’t reliant on one technical person interested in cutting up clips and tracking stats is a game changer.”
The club believes that they haven’t fully unlocked the potential of SportsVisio. This off-season, they plan to integrate it further into their player development plans and start building multi-season data and player profiles. From a community perspective, the ability to generate social media clips and showcase what happens on the court is another huge advantage that has only started to be realized.
“We’re still catching up with what the system can do, but overall, I can’t emphasize enough how highly we rate SportsVisio. The fact that it’s available at a price point accessible to clubs like ours makes it even more valuable."
