From Manual Tracking to AI Insights: Ray Payton’s Experience with SportsVisio in AAU Basketball

Ray Payton, mother to a competitive player for an AAU basketball organization based in Maryland, sought out SportsVisio to advance her daughter Sarah’s game.

Unlocking insights with AI

In the years before finding SportsVisio, Payton and her fiancé tracked team highlights. They would watch the game, working to record key stats manually, knowing some moments were naturally being missed and it would be difficult to glean insights from what had been jotted down. Payton would also videotape games to share with family, so they could watch Sarah “grow up through her basketball.”

In early 2024, Payton found SportsVisio almost by accident. A top advocate for the app ever since, Payton shared that SportsVisio and its AI capabilities have been “a game changer.”

“I have a background in IT and keep up with AI, so I’m familiar with some of the advancements,” said Payton. “When I came across SportsVisio, I already had videos recorded, so it was easy to start uploading. I loved the app immediately because it gave me highlight reels I could use on social and with high school coaches to build my daughter’s profile.”

Personalized stats improve player performance

“In the beginning of our basketball journey, I was a parent driving 45 minutes to see my kid play for four minutes,” added Payton. “Wanting to help my daughter improve and get more game time, there was this frustrating, different dynamic. You’re looking at your child as a parent and seeing the best versus having the data to see the reality.”

SportsVisio shows stats per both game and season, giving parents (and coaches) the ability to have an unbiased conversation with a player. In sharing the straightforward numbers with her daughter, Payton said this “changed the parent-kid relationship.” A player can see for themselves their percentages and game summaries, and video highlights are backed up by an entire game’s stats.

“My daughter sees her own progress. She knows it’s not just my opinion,” said Payton. “This is the biggest benefit for us. SportsVisio improves our post-game discussions and bolsters Sarah’s confidence, as she can see firsthand how she’s improved in a year’s time.”

SportsVisio is also useful when reviewing stats and highlights from a repeat competitor. Coaches can identify what certain players on the opposing team do and offer strategies, as well as advise individuals on their habits and tendencies revealed by the app.

Easy to share with others

Payton’s use of SportsVisio became a benefit for the broader team. She began sharing highlights of other players with their parents. And Payton runs the team’s Instagram page, posting clips for every player.

“Some of the parents are really amazed, and they’re appreciative. Most parents don’t record games, and most middle school coaches aren’t providing game reviews at that level,” said Payton.

SportsVisio gives parents and coaches an opportunity to identify true top performers, using numbers versus impressions on both sides. And if a potential future coach comes to see a player, SportsVisio provides the full history of player performance versus what an interested coach might be able to observe in a single game.

Payton concluded, “SportsVisio empowers players and ensures they don’t undervalue their performance. Seeing the stats, you see the truth.”
